Painted country life

Parallels – Differences
China, Appenzellerland and Toggenburg possess a wealth of traditions. In both China and Switzerland, many people – often farmers – paint. They create paintings about their life and their world, both of which are subject to constant change. The exhibition at Haus Appenzell juxtaposed the similarities and differences inherent in the folk art produced in various Chinese provinces and in the region around Mount Säntis. The works of more than forty artists were shown. Techniques and representation could not be more different, yet there are also many parallels. Photographs taken by Matthias Messmer, who has travelled widely in China, add another intriguing aspect to the exhibition.
